Pride Month Music 03-I Kissed a Girl by Jill Sobule

Music Lettering

Happy Pride Month! 🌈🏳️‍🌈

As we approach the end of Pride Month, I’m creating lettering pieces celebrating music related to LGBTQIA+ community. My goal is to expose people to good music and artists while also help bringing the community filled with diversity together, since music is like a universal language that can touch anyone’s heart.

Today, I chose the song “I Kissed a Girl”—no, not that Katy Perry song, but the one from way back in 1995 by Jill Sobule. What I love about this song is how openly and honestly it talks about a woman kissing another woman through such a simple and relatable story: two friends hanging out, sharing drinks, and then sharing a kiss. It’s fun, lighthearted, and sweet, portraying queer attraction as something natural and real—without making a big deal out of it.

The song reminds me that it’s okay to explore your identity, to be curious, and to discover—or even carve out—your your true identities. Being true to yourself and honest about what you want is completely normal, even if it doesn’t fit society’s usual expectations. That kind of openness from this song can help people feel seen, hopeful, and less alone on their journey.

For the lettering, I wanted to capture that same softness and sweetness, while adding a bit of spontaneity through quick, handwritten styles—reflecting both tenderness and the excitement of discovery.

I Kissed a Girl by Jill Sobule

Jenny came over and told me 'bout BradHe's such a hairy behemoth she saidDumb as a box of hammersBut he's such a handsome guy

And I opened up and I told her 'bout LarryAnd yesterday how he asked me to marryAnd I'm not giving him an answer yetI think I can do better

So we laughedCompared notesWe had a drinkWe had a smokeShe took off her overcoat

I kissed a girlI kissed a girl

She called home to say she'd be lateHe said he'd worried but now he'd feel safeI'm glad you're with your girlfriendTell her hi for me

And then I looked at youYou had guilt in your eyesBut it only lasted a little whileAnd then I felt your hand above my knee

And we laughedAt the worldThey can have their diamondsAnd we'll have our pearls

I kissed a girlI kissed a girl

I kissed a girl, her lips were sweetShe was just like kissin' meKissed a girl won't change the worldBut I'm so glad I kissed a girl

And we laughedAt the worldThey can have their diamonds andWe'll have our pearls

I kissed a girlFor the first timeI kissed a girlAnd I may do it againI kissed a girlI kissed a girl

I kissed a girl her lips were sweetShe was just like kissin' meBut yeah I kissed a girlKissed a girl won't change the worldBut I'm so glad I kissed a girl

(For the first time)I kissed a girl(For the last time)I kissed a girl!
